King’s Domain Gardens, Melbourne is a historical garden with an area covering over 100 acres of lawns and pathways. King’s Domain Gardens is part of the Domain parklands in Melbourne based on the south side of the Yarra River, Melbourne, off St Kilda Road. One of the most beautiful gardens in Melbourne, it draws its name from the celebration of Melbourne’s centenary in 1935, when the public parklands of the Domain got possession of 17 hectares of land within the grounds of Government House.

The sprawling area of the King’s Domain Gardens, Melbourne lies adjacent to celebrated Melbourne tourist attractions like the Alexandra Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. The garden also encompasses the Government House Reserve, home of the Governors of Victoria, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, the La Trobe’s Cottage, Melbourne and the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne.

There is an amphitheatre at the King’s Domain Gardens, Melbourne, which is the venue for popular and classical musical events. It is sometimes also converted into a public ice-skating ring during the autumn and winter months in Melbourne.

One of the moving features of this Melbourne garden is the solitary Calabrian Pine, one of the city’s most significant trees. A young soldier brought the seed of this tree to Australia during his return from the battlefield at Lone Pine in Gallipoli during the WW - I. Another great feature of the garden is a lush fern gully with a flight of stairs leading to a small pool making the garden an essential destination for those out for sightseeing in Melbourne.

The King’s Domain Gardens, Melbourne is home to several exotic and mature trees. Memorial statues and sculptures, telling a story of their own, surround the garden. There is a four-kilometer path around the garden that was once a horse-exercising track and now is now a favorite jogging track for the city residents.

The King’s Domain had been used for many purposes before becoming parkland in 1854. It has been progressively developed since that time with the most striking feature being the re-routing of St Kilda Road to create an artificial hill for the Shrine of Remembrance making it a dominant view along the city’s Swanston Street. A section of the domain became a unique setting for Government House, the home of Victoria’s Governor. This area is open to the public on a limited basis. In the 1950s an important addition was the Sidney Myer Music Bowl which is home to numbers of open air performances during the summer months. Also in the Domain are the Pioneer Women’s Garden. This was built in 1934 as a tribute to the pioneer women of Victoria and it is adjoined by a sunken garden and reflecting pool. The Domain is also home to Governor La Trobe’s Cottage - the humble forerunner to the nearby Government House. Visible from St Kilda Road is the Linlithgow Flower Bed with its changing plantings commemorating particular organisations or events
